Enter Lady Macbeth

Come, you spirits
That tend on mortal thoughts! unsex me here,
And fill me from the crown to the toe, top-full
Of direst cruelty...

Allow me to introduce you to Lady Macbeth who is not in complete bloom yet, but is so amazing I had to get out the camera.

I can see how slipper orchids might become addictive. The variety of shapes and colors all based on the same theme of the crowned slipper is entrancing, that is for sure.

In the photo below, you can see how much more imposing Lady M is when compared to mischievous scamp Pinocchio.

You will notice that the leaves of Lady Macbeth are mottled green and white, while Pinocchio's are plain green. According to my various orchid books, that tells me that Lady M prefers dimmer light and more moisture. So they are in different places, and only together here for the comparison photograph.

Pinocchio's bloom has been out for over a month now, and there's a young bud growing on the stem below. That's another very pleasing aspect of orchids -- the blooms can stick around for months, providing lots of viewing and tending pleasure.

There's another paphiopedilum called Macbeth's ghost and one called Hamlet's Quest. I'm not going to be tempted until I've made it through to the next growing season with these two. Then we'll see!

If you've checked out some of the entries earlier this year in my blog, you know I have an obsession with native wild orchids. I find them, photograph them and hope I see them again next season.
My wife is great with house plants and we always end up with the orchids that our rich American friends buy when they are here at their homes and then have to abandon when they go back to the states.
My particular house plant obsession is jungle cactus. I have a hylocereus which I rescued a cutting from many years ago from a dying specimen in a Chinese carryout in New York. It grew into a monster which covered the ceiling of one room in my NYC apt. I smuggled a leaf in my luggage a few years ago and now another monster is taking over a corner of the living room and blooming.
It is a night blooming cereus with huge white blossoms 5 inches across. In the jungle, these cactus blossoms are pollinated by bats!
They take a few weeks to form and then stay open for just one night.
I'm going to take some pictures of them when they bloom, I'll let you know.
The funny thing, I've rarely ever seen them in cactus catalogs. I didn't know what I had uuntil it bloomed!

Microdot, I thoroughly enjoy your postings about the wild orchids and drool over every picture you post of them! Keep up the excellent work and I won't report you to the leaf smuggling police!
